Pedreguer is a typical agricultural town and municipality in the north-east of the province of Alicante, located in the Marina Alta district (comarca). It covers an area of 29.57 km² and has a population of around 8,500 people.

The municipality is located in the valley of the Girona River, and in its southern part there are uplands, mountains and cliffs, including Montaña Grande, Peña del Perro Flaco, Hoyas and others.

It is interesting to note that the municipality of Pedreguer crosses the Greenwich meridian on the Carretera de Benidoleig road in the Clot de l'Alberca area.

For many years, the main economic activity of Pedreguer has been agriculture. The land here is used to grow various vegetables, citrus fruits and grapes, from which the traditional and very tasty sultanas are made. The town also has a well-developed leather goods industry, specialising in the production of hats, bags and accessories. There are also factories in Pedregueres for the production of furniture, packaging and building materials. In addition, the municipality's economy is influenced by tourism, as cycling and mountaineering enthusiasts like to visit the area.

How to get to Pedreguer?

The distance between Pedreguer and Alicante is approximately 87 kilometres. The most convenient way to get to the city is by hire car or bus. Pedreguer can be reached via the N-332 motorway and the CV-724, CV-732, CV-720 motorways.

Historical background of the town of Pedreguer

The origin of the town is linked to the Randero Cave, where archaeological remains from the Neolithic era were found. The name of the cave comes from the Celtic word "Rand", which means "limit" or "boundary". The cave later became an important sacred place for the Iberian people, as evidenced by the large number of funerary remains from this period.

During the Roman era, there was a settlement here, as evidenced by the remains of Roman burials found in the area. It is also believed that an ancient Roman cobbled road ran through the settlement.

The name of the town comes from the Latin "petra" (stone) and "eger/ager" (field), which means "stony ground".

Pedreguer has architectural sights and interesting places that tourists simply have to look at. The houses with brightly coloured facades, lattice balconies and carved wooden doors are a special feature of this town. Festivities in Pedreguer

Pedregueres hosts various festive events throughout the year, among which the following are particularly notable:

  • Fiestas Patronales - celebrations in honour of the patron saints of the town. From 8 to 17 July, the San Buenaventura celebrations are held, accompanied by a bull race and music bands.
  • Feast of San Blas. Celebrated on 3 February. On this day, residents visit the chapel of Santo Cristo del Calvario and place candles.
  • Fiesta Medio Año de Quintadas. This local fiesta is held at the end of January and beginning of February and has been celebrated since 2013.
