General information about the town

Alfaz del Pi (Alfaz del Pi, L'Alfàs del Pi) is a cosy resort town in the province of Alicante (Valencian Community), located in the Marina Baja area near Benidorm. This resort is famous for its tranquillity, as well as for the presence of good clinics, health centres and sports complexes of the coast. It is especially loved by connoisseurs of quiet and secluded holidays.

Today the town has a population of just over 20 thousand people, half of whom are foreigners. Scandinavians especially like to spend winter here.

The city occupies a very favourable geographical position - it is located between Benidorm and Altea in the heart of the Costa Blanca. Unlike neighbouring noisy Benidorm, here you can find the peace and comfort of a resort town.

Alfas del Pi is located two kilometres from the sea. The nearest beach to the town is Albir, which even in the peak summer season is not busy with crowds of holidaymakers. It is a cosy pebble beach with a lighthouse, a beautiful promenade and rocky shores above the sea. Also, if desired, holidaymakers can go to the large beach Cap Blanc, which is located 3.5 km east of the city.

The main industry of the city is tourism and agriculture. In the vicinity of the city grow vineyards, almond and olive trees, figs, almonds, citrus fruits and others.

Today Alfas del Pi is a modern resort with prestigious housing, and the standard of living in the town is considered the highest in the province.

Climate and weather

The city boasts a favourable climate suitable for both recreation and permanent residence. There are more than 300 sunny days a year, and there is almost no precipitation. The hottest months are July and August, the temperature at this time can rise to +30 degrees Celsius. Rainy days are 1-2 per month.

The coolest months are from December to March, but the temperature during this period does not fall below 14-16 degrees Celsius.

Historical background

The first Iberian settlements in this territory appeared as early as the 5th century BC, and in the 2nd-4th centuries AD the Romans lived here. Until 1258 the region was under the rule of the Moors.

The history of the city began in the XVI century, when this settlement was still called Alfas del Polop. The locals in those times were actively engaged in agriculture. At that time the construction of the complex irrigation system Rieg Mayor de Alfaz began, after which the agricultural land began to develop and the population grew. It was also during this period that the Alfaz fortress was built to defend against attacks by Berber pirates.

In 1836, the name of the town was changed to its present name.
